Ian Taylor
Born in 1925 in the house where he now lives Ian is the son of Robert & Lois and brother of Anthea Lancaster, another OBA member. Ian attended Blandford Grammar School 1933-42, gained School Cert in 1939, Higher Cert 1941 & 42. He was Head Boy 1941-2. In 1942 he gained a County Scholarship. Whilst at school he took part in several drama productions, was holder of the 220yd cup for one year and was a member of the Army Cadet Force and 1480 Squadron Air Training Corps, being a Sergeant in each of those organisations. Ian was also a founder member of Blandford Youth club.
Further education was at St Peters Hall, Oxford 1942-3 and 1947-50, reading French and German. He rowed in College 1st VIII 1948-9. Gained a B.A.(Hons) 1949. During the period 1943-7 Ian was in the RAF under aircrew training and in 1950 gained a Diploma in Education
Ian married Elizabeth Liebrich from Alsace in 1948 and they had 5 sons and 1 daughter, with 6 grandsons. Ian was widowed in 1987.
From 1951-1964 he taught in Secondary Schools in the Isle of Wight, Essex and Bournemouth. During 1957-64 he was part time leader of Portcastrian Youth Club in Bournemouth.
He was Senior Lecturer at Leicester College of Education teaching courses to B.Ed.(Hons) 1964-84. He was oral examiner in French for Cambridge and Assoc Examining Board, External Examiner for Post-Graduate Cert in Education, Kings College London 1981-4. Vice Chairman and Chairman of Audio-Visual Language Association then Chairman, later Treasurer 1984-91. 1966-87 Vice President Leicester French Circle. The years 1984-87 Ian spent in supply teaching.
In 1988 Ian returned to Blandford and is now minutes Secretary of Blandford and District Civic Society, Member of Dorset Group of Institute of Advanced Motorists (no longer an Observer due to the 'cut-off' age of 70).Vice Chairman of the recently formed Blandford U3A (University of the Third Age)
Ian became a committee member in June 1998. His other interests are languages, DIY, maps, motoring, foreign travel, occasional badminton , swimming and walking (preferably with someone's dog!)
Ian remarried in 1999, his wife Norma is a retired Psychology lecturer from Vancouver, WA. They knew each other as married post graduates in Oxford in the 1950s. They met again in 1995 and now commute UK-USA where Norma still has a home.
